The cow has historical significance that goes back to the founding of the Swiss Confederation in 1291. In 1386, during the Battle of Sempach, the cow symbolised the fight against the Habsburg lion.

 

The animal is celebrated and adored nation wide, Stock that live in the Alps during warmer months are dawned with a traditional flower crown which highlights the return of the cattle where the herdsmen carefully decorate the cows for there descent to the bottom of the mountains where it is warmer during winter.
