Ruru - The Night Owl

Ruru - The Night Owl

Title - "Ruru - The Night Owl"

The quote of Inspiration for creating this artwork:

"The best and most beautiful things in the world cannot be seen or even touched - they must be felt with the heart." -Helen Keller

My first memories of seeing an owl or as we like to say in New Zealand Morepork or in Maori Ruru, was growing up on the Eastern Bay of Plenty. Our family home was on the shore of the Pacific surrounded by forest, huge trees that for a long time were a focal point of my art.

At night it was common to be visited by an Owl or two, they would land on the deck railing scouping out insects that were attracted to the light from inside, I would watch them hunt and be captivated how they moved and fly up to the window I would be standing behind so they could catch their prey, their favourite seemed to be the Puriri Month.

In the depiction of this piece, I imagined the moment where the Morepork (Owl) would perch itself on the deck railing, the Braille encryption is displayed at the top of the artwork which in translation means: "The best and most beautiful things in the world cannot be seen or even touched - they must be felt with the heart." -Helen Keller

I used this quote as it's been a metaphor for me living abroad in Switzerland, feeling homesick at times, unable to see loved ones and feel the mauri (energy) of New Zealand,  still feel it spiritually present and greatful for the lasting memories I have with me. Somehow no matter the distance there is a current that runs through us, that connects us, even if we are not physically able to be present or see, we are all lucky to have an instict to know the beauty that exists in our own hearts.
