The green sea turtle (Chelonia mydas), also known as the green turtle, black (sea) turtle or Pacific green turtle is a species of large sea turtle of the family Cheloniidae. It is the only species in the genus Chelonia. Its range extends throughout tropical and subtropical seas around the world, with two distinct populations in the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, but it is also found in the Indian Ocean. The common name refers to the usually green fat found beneath its carapace, not to the color of its carapace, which is olive to black.

Over the years, dozens of sea ecology projects have helped to protect sea turtles and the habitats they need to survive, from East Africa, Asia to the Caribbean.

.

I've travelled to many countries, diving and snorkeling, witnessing the effects of pollution and plastic caused by humans, creating waste and debris that has a huge damaging impact on the environment and lives of our sea creatures.

.

This Green Sea Turtle depicted in this Artwork, I seen while snorkeling off the shore of a Caribbean Island called Aruba in 2019, the island itself is surrounded by nesting grounds for leatherback, loggerhead, and green sea turtles.

As  a large-scale tourism Island, the country relies on tourism for its economy, it was encouraging to learn about innovative  projects  training local residents and tourist to work and volunteer as rangers to patrol the certain lagoons and clean the the endless debris that washes up ashore and in the water. This offers much-needed, sustainable employment opportunities, as well as better enforcement of poaching laws. There are many projects like this that facilitate ecotourism activities globally.

.

.

We can all do our part whether large or small, to remove harmful debris from the ocean and beaches if we see anything, it all helps. Some people get creative by  “upcycling” discarded sails, nets and debris into products.
